“No one can serve two masters.
matthew 6:24
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples that no person can serve two masters; one will be hated and the other loved. He also instructs them not to worry about what they wear or eat, for the Father provides for the birds and makes the grass grow. Being anxious about life is not necessary, for if they seek the kingdom of heaven, everything else will be provided to them by the Father.
Do you have two masters you serve in your life? Many of us do without realizing it. One master might be God, and the other your career. Or perhaps you serve your stomach with food and your eyes with social media. Whatever it may be, our goal in life is to only serve God. He is the one who provides for us in multiple ways and the one whom we are truly created for.
Jesus tells us not to worry, especially about meaningless things in the grand scheme of life – clothes, food, drink. When we start to develop anxieties about these trivial matters, we can soon become slaves to them. Many people are vain about their appearance and so become a slave to the latest fashion trends. Others are concerned about their financial status and devout their lives to the stock market or their salary.
When we serve something other than God, it makes sense that we worry. Other earthly masters do not provide security, peace, true joy or love. They only give us something temporary, whereas Christ provides us with something eternal. How can you begin to better serve God today?
