You are the light of the world.
Matthew 5:14
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. When salt loses its taste, it is useless and must be thrown out. Likewise, light is not covered up and hidden, but rather set on a lampstand for all to see. Jesus tells them their light must shine before others so the Father can be glorified through their good deeds.
Jesus calls all of us today to continue being a light for the world. We must shine before others and show them the path to Christ. There are many bright and shiny ‘lights’ in the world, posing as good things that will make us happy. Whatever those distracting lights may be, they are only temptations and fall short of their promise.
In contrast, the light of Christ never burns out and does hold true to providing a person with peace, joy, and love. Jesus asks us to be that light for others through our good deeds. It is easy to get lost in the world’s darkness; we must strive to provide light to all we encounter. This can be accomplished through simple things: a smile, opening a door for someone, complimenting a person, or simply waving. When we are genuine in our encounters, Christ shines through and shows someone how much they are loved by him.
Reflect on how you can let Christ’s loving light shine through you today. Will you be the light this word so desperately needs?
