Gospel Reflection – May 29, 2025

The disciples are confused when Jesus tells them he will soon not be with them, but then a little while after, he will be. Jesus knows they don’t understand, and proceeds to explain that they will lament his departure while the world rejoices, yet soon their sorrow will turn into joy.

The disciples seem concerned with the indefinite timing Jesus gives them – a little while. Although they are confused in general with his words, the lack of a specific timeline appears to be frustrating. We are often frustrated with God’s timing in our lives – perhaps thinking it’s too late, too early, or just not when we want it.

Yet God’s timing is perfect every time, even if we don’t initially see that. As humans, we like to know the precise time something will occur, particularly when it pertains to prayer and faith. This is where trust comes in. Jesus asks us to trust that he will answer our prayers, but when he deems it is best for us. Sometimes this may take years.

Trust that he knows best, not us. Whether it takes a ‘little while’ or a long while, Jesus is always using that time to bring us closer to himself.
