Gospel Reflection – May 24, 2025

Jesus tells his disciples that they do not belong to the world, and so the world hates them, just as it hates Jesus. Because the world has persecuted Jesus, it will also persecute the disciples because of his name.

The dissatisfaction we often feel with the world and what it offers makes sense in the context of today’s Gospel. Jesus tells us we do not belong to the world; rather, we belong to him. Therefore, we will encounter many difficulties and persecutions. Yet in the end, we know not to be worried or afraid, because Jesus is on our side and is the ultimate victor.

Despite all this, so many of us still try to live by the world’s standards and its attempts at providing us lasting happiness. When we come to realize that it cannot do so, then we can begin living by Christ’s standards and understand the hate and evil we may be shown by the world at large. Through it all, remember that Jesus is by our side, guiding and loving us, preparing an eternal life that has no hate, only pure joy and peace.

Saint of the Day

St. David I of Scotland: ca. 1080 – 1153

“Let me rather think about the things of God, so that my spirit may set out strengthened on its journey from exile to home. When I stand before God’s tremendous judgment seat, you will not be able to answer for me or defend me.”

St. David I
