Gospel Reflection – May 17, 2025

Jesus tells his disciples that if they know him, they also know the Father, for the Father dwells in Jesus. Philip asks to be shown the Father, but Jesus questions how he does not realize that the Father is already present in Jesus.

Jesus’ reverence for his Father is evident in this passage. Jesus acts not on his own, but through God, doing the works of his Father in perfect obedience. Their relationship is beautiful to contemplate. These two persons of the Holy Trinity perfectly act out the will of each other.

How can we be obedient like Jesus? God our Father always knows what is best for us, yet we don’t follow his will perfectly like Jesus does. We must strive to desire and carry out God’s will in everything we do. The way to grow closer to our heavenly Father is to follow his Son’s example – obeying even unto death. We may not be called to die in such a way, but there are other ways God is calling us to die to ourselves so that we can grow in union with him. Reflect on how you can listen to God’s will and act upon it daily.
