Gospel Reflection – May 4, 2025

Peter and some other disciples go out fishing but catch nothing. At daybreak, Jesus appears on the beach and tells them to cast the net again. This time, there are abundant fish and they recognize the Lord. They proceed to haul the fish in and have breakfast with Jesus.

The scene occurs after Jesus is raised from the dead. Yet we see that Peter goes back to his old profession, fishing. He still has bad luck catching anything until Jesus appears. We, too, often go back to old habits, routines, ways of life, after encountering Jesus. Perhaps we think that it will be different this time around. The comfort we experience from the known might feel good for a time, but is ultimately unsatisfactory compared to our new life with Christ.

When we encounter Jesus in a profound way, he transforms our lives. Going back to our old ways doesn’t often work or is drastically different. Jesus calls us to something higher and more pure.

Let Jesus continually transform you. Let him always call you to something more. He wants you in heaven, and for that, we must answer the Lord’s dynamic call.
