Gospel Reflection – May 2, 2025

Jesus is followed by a large crowd and wants to feed them. He asks the disciples how much money they have to buy bread, but it is not enough. A boy provides them with five barley loaves and two fish, which Jesus miraculously multiplies and feeds all the people with. The people then want to take Jesus and make him king, so he withdraws from them alone.

The Apostle Andrew questions Jesus about the amount of fish and loaves: “What are they among so many?” His doubt is legitimate, but Jesus is clearly able to provide with such a small amount. Likewise, we can question Jesus about how he can make any drastic change in our lives or others’ on so little to work with. We question how he can provide for us spiritually, physically, financially, when we have so little at times.

Jesus is able to provide in abundance, many times over what we need. He is generous and loving. He takes what little we give him and multiplies it significantly. All we must do is put our faith and trust in him. Jesus will not disappoint when we give him all we have, even if we don’t think it’s much.

Reflect on how you can place greater trust in the Lord, knowing he will provide and care for you. He can do much with little – give him what you have and let him do the rest.

Saint of the Day

St. Athanasius: ca. AD 296 – 373

“For the more He is mocked among the unbelieving, the more witness does He give of His own Godhead; inasmuch as He not only Himself demonstrates as possible what men mistake, thinking impossible, but what men deride as unseemly.”

On the Incarnation of the Word, St. Athanasius
