With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,

but he vanished from their sight.
Luke 24:13-35
Reflection
Two disciples are on their way to Emmaus when they encounter Jesus, although they don’t recognize him. Jesus asks what they are discussing, and they explain the events surrounding his death. Jesus then explains the Scriptures regarding himself as they journey. When they arrive for supper, Jesus takes bread and blesses it; the men instantly recognize Jesus, but he disappears from sight. They then go and tell the Eleven what happened.
Jesus can reveal himself to us at the most unexpected of times, just like he did with the two disciples. While we may not recognize his presence at first, afterwards we realize he was with us most intimately, guiding and helping us.
We can easily get caught up in the busyness of life, forgetting to acknowledge Jesus’ presence or even thinking he isn’t there. Yet the Lord never leaves us, and there are many moments throughout the day when he makes himself known. We must have an open heart and mind to receive him at those times.
Pray for a greater awareness of Jesus in your life. Ask to have your heart, mind, and soul opened to him so that you can perceive his goodness and love even in the darkest moments.
Saint of the Day
St. George: died AD 303
Prayer to St. George:
Faithful servant of God and invincible martyr, St. George; favored by God with the gift of faith, and inflamed with an ardent love of Christ, thou didst fight valiantly against the dragon of pride, falsehood, and deceit. Neither pain nor torture, sword nor death could part thee from the love of Christ. I fervently implore thee for the sake of this love to help me by thy intercession to overcome the temptations that surround me, and to bear bravely the trials that oppress me, so that I may patiently carry the cross which is placed upon me; and let neither distress nor difficulties separate me from the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Valiant champion of the Faith, assist me in the combat against evil, that I may win the crown promised to them that persevere unto the end.
St. George, pray for us!
