Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went away quickly from the tomb,
matthew 28:8-9
fearful yet overjoyed,
and ran to announce the news to his disciples.
And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them.
Matthew 28:8-15
Reflection
While Mary Magdalene and the other Mary are on their way to tell the disciples Jesus is risen, they encounter Jesus themselves, worshiping him. Jesus instructs them to go to the disciples in Galilee where they will see him. Meanwhile, the guards of the tomb tell the chief priests what happened at the tomb, and are paid off to keep quiet and tell people Jesus’ disciples stole his body.
Amid their joy and fear, the two women see Jesus and fall at his feet, worshiping. Imagine how they felt seeing Jesus again – probably a mixture of emotions. How do we react and feel when we encounter Jesus? Is there fear, anger, sorrow, love, joy, excitement?
Our Lord has risen from the dead and comes to renew our own lives. When we see him in the world – in the Eucharist, an image, a fellow human being – let’s remember how Mary Magdalene reacted. Certainly there was much love and rejoicing. We should also rejoice to encounter the Lord and be eager to follow the path he has laid out for us. He tells us to not be afraid – he is here with us always. Alleluia!
