Gospel Reflection – April 9, 2025

Jesus says to the people who believe in him that the truth will make them free, yet they are confused and declare they’ve never been in bondage. Jesus then says that anyone who sins is a slave to sin and only the Son can make one truly free.

The Jews’ response to Jesus that they have never been in bondage is laughable. Throughout history, they have been ruled by various ancient powers and always pleaded to God to set them free. We might chuckle at their inability to see this, but it applies to us as well. How often are we blinded by our sins, thinking we are free, yet truly tied down by them?

We can become so caught up in a particular sin that we fail to see it as sinful and that we need to be freed from it. Jesus offers us that freedom. If we listen to his word and follow him, the truth will be revealed and we will truly be free. Jesus helps us discover the sins that are holding us back and offers a way out, a way to back to him. Will you take it?

Reflect on your interior life. Where are your sins holding you back and clouding Christ’s goodness, truth, and beauty? Pray for the grace to let go of sin and embrace Jesus fully.

Saint of the Day

St. Waldetrudis: AD 612 – 688

St. Waldetrudis was a very devout Christian woman whose children became saints. Both her and her husband helped the poor in their community. Once their children were raised, St. Waldetrudis’ husband retired to an abbey, and St. Waldetrudis herself became a nun, founding her own convent.

St. Waldetrudis, pray for us!
