Gospel Reflection – March 30, 2025

Once again, we hear the parable of the prodigal son, who returns to his father after wasting his inheritance. He is welcomed back with open arms and rejoicing.

In this Gospel passage, the Pharisees and scribes complain that Jesus is speaking to sinners and tax collectors. This parable is then addressed to them. How often are we like the Pharisees, complaining about Jesus appealing to and teaching even the worst of humanity? We often place ourselves above others for the mere reason that we think we’re not as sinful or ‘bad.’

But in this parable, Jesus reminds us we’re all sinners, not inherently better than others because we practice our faith. Let us not forget we are weak and need God’s mercy and healing continually. He offers that to us when we turn back to him, just as the prodigal son does.
