‘Sir, leave it for this year also,
lke 13:8-9
and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;
it may bear fruit in the future.’
Luke 13:1-9
Reflection
Jesus asks the people if they think they’re more worthy than others who have died tragically. He tells them if they don’t repent, they will perish like these others. Jesus also tells a parable about a fig tree that hasn’t borne fruit for three years. The owner wants to cut it down, but the gardener asks to tend it for one more year, and cut it down if it still doesn’t produce fruit.
We are called to produce good fruit during our lives. By living a Christian lifestyle, growing in virtue, and developing a strong relationship with Jesus, we can do so. Sometimes we might feel that we are like the non-producing fig tree. At those times, we must continue to persevere in Christ.
If we are genuinely trying to follow Christ as best we can, we will produce fruit, even if we don’t see it or realize it. Ask the Lord to help you continue down your spiritual journey with strength and dedication, even in the toughest of times.
