Gospel Reflection – March 7, 2025

The disciples of John the Baptist ask Jesus why they and the Pharisees fast, but Jesus’ disciples do not. He answers them by asking how the wedding guests can mourn when they have the bridegroom with them. Jesus goes on to say that there will be a time when the bridegroom is taken away and then they will fast.

When we are with Jesus, we should celebrate and enjoy his presence. During prayer and when we receive the Eucharist, his presence can be permeating. Yet at the same time, we are still separated from our Lord on this earth to some degree. Thus, during the season of Lent, we fast and mourn, awaiting his return, especially on Good Friday.

We are only pilgrims on this earth. Our desire is to be united with God in heaven for all eternity. So while exiled on earth, we fast in preparation for our eventual union with him. How can you offer up fasting to grow closer to Jesus this Lent?
