Gospel Reflection – February 16, 2025

Jesus presents the Beatitudes to a large crowd of his disciples. For all those who suffer in some way on earth, their reward will be great in heaven. For those who “have it all” now on earth, they are condemned to woe.

Do we embrace the trials and crosses in this life gladly? Do we see sufferings as ways to grow in holiness? Jesus tells us that the reward will be great in heaven for those who endure persecution, poverty, sorrow, etc.

While it is not bad to enjoy earthly goods, we must do so with humility. When we become enamored with worldly pleasures and pursuits, we easily lose sight of the kingdom of God. Of course, Jesus doesn’t want us to always suffer, but be prepared to take up your cross when it comes and bear it gladly, knowing that it is for your santification.

Pray for a greater strength to endure suffering and to set your sights on heaven, not earth.

Saint of the Day

St. Daniel: died AD 309

St. Daniel and companions (Sts. Elias, Jeremy, Isaias, and Samuel) were Egyptians who visited fellow Christians forced to work in mines during Emperor Maximus’ persecution of Christians. They were caught and brought before the governor, subsequently being tortured and beheaded for the Faith.

St. Daniel, pray for us!
