Jesus said to them,
mark 1:17-18
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Then they left their nets and followed him.
Mark 1:14-20
Reflection
Jesus calls the disciples Simon, Andrew, James, and John in today’s Gospel. All leave their fishing careers behind and follow Jesus.
We read that they immediately leave everything and follow Jesus. What was so unsatisfying about their lives that they made this decision? We should ponder this question for ourselves – have we ever left behind our old lives to completely follow Jesus? If not, would we?
Jesus’ call requires all of yourself – not a third or a half. While he will certainly help you orient and transform your life towards him slowly, you must be committed to doing so wholeheartedly. Following Christ is not always easy, but the path to heaven is more satisfactory and rewarding than what the world offers.
Reflect on how you can follow Jesus a little more each day. Ask him to guide you closer to himself and aid you in giving up the things of this world.

St. Hilary of Poitiers: ca. 315 – 368
“For the word of God cannot be exiled as our bodies are, or so chained and bound that it cannot be imparted to you in any place.”
