Reflection
Mary Magdalene tells the Apostles that Jesus’ tomb is empty, so Peter and John run to his tomb. John arrives first, but doesn’t go in. Peter enters the tomb first and sees the burial cloths. When John follows Peter in, he sees and believes.
Sometimes we are John, eagerly rushing into something – a belief, a physical location – but then hesitate at the final moment, perhaps out of fear, anticipation, or disbelief. At other times, we are Peter, arriving more slowly at the ‘thing,’ yet immediately entering into it. Our response varies on the situation. For religious matters, eagerness and caution can both be important. Discerning a matter we have heard about is a wise decision, yet remember that when it comes to Jesus, he is always true.
He will always lead you to himself, the Truth, even if it takes a longer time. Be eager in pursuing the Truth like John, and steadfast in your belief like Peter. The Lord wants you to believe in his beauty, goodness, and utter love for you. Let him show you the way.
Saint of the Day
St. John the Apostle
The next day John [the Baptist] was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.
John 1:35-39
