Gospel Reflection – December 23, 2024

Elizabeth gives birth to her son, and when asked what she will name the child, all are surprised at her answer: John. The neighbors then turn to mute Zechariah, who confirms his wife’s response. Immediately, Zechariah is able to speak again, and everyone is filled with fear, yet takes what has happened to heart.

How often do we pause to take things into our heart, reflecting and pondering? Many times, we hear something, acknowledge it, and then move on. Time is not always taken to let information truly penetrate our being. This happens with all manner of occasion, not merely religious topics.

However, when we do hear/learn something from the Gospel, a homily, a spiritual director, a spiritual book, we should take extra time to let the words seep into our hearts. Intentionally reflect and pray on what you’ve heard and let it lead you closer to Jesus. When we take time to ponder the goodness and mystery of God, we deepen our relationship with him.

Saint of the Day

St. John of Kanty: 1390 – 1473

“Fight all false opinions, but let your weapons be patience, sweetness and love. Roughness is bad for your own soul and spoils the best cause.”

St. John of Kanty
