They discussed this among themselves and said,
matthew 21:25-27
“If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us,
‘Then why did you not believe him?’
But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd,
for they all regard John as a prophet.”
So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.”
Matthew 21:23-27
Reflection
Jesus’ authority is questioned by the chief priests and elders of the people while preaching in the temple. In response, Jesus asks them if John’s baptism was of heavenly or earthly origin. If they answer correctly, Jesus will answer their original question. Of course, the priests and elders say they do not know, for reasons of fear and embarrassment. Jesus therefore does not tell them anything about his authority.
Today, we may question certain aspects of the Chruch and Jesus’ teaching. Questioning isn’t a bad thing – it generally leads to greater appreciation and understanding. But when we refuse to acknowledge the correct answer, we can make ourselves look like the chief priests and elders who knew they were in the wrong but refused to acknowledge it, thereby appearing to be fools.
Jesus wants to reveal many things about himself to us, but are we prepared to accept them and live accordingly? Are we worried about looking foolish to the world when we follow Christ? Jesus wants us to accept his authority in our lives daily. Let’s gather the courage to choose him constantly and lead a life of holiness and truth.
