“To what shall I compare this generation?
matthew 11:16-17
It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,
‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance,
we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.”
Matthew 11:16-19
Reflection
The Gospel today presents a somewhat complicated message. Jesus compares his generation to children who don’t listen to one another’s suggestions. Jesus also points out that both he and John the Baptist are seen as committing irregular and unapproved behaviors – not eating and drinking, and being friends with tax collectors and sinners.
Jesus often does the unexpected in our lives. The way he acts in our lives might be seen as counter-cultural and against our modern norms. But he is never wrong, and even if we don’t understand how he is working or why something occurs a certain way, be assured that it is for the greater good and your own path to holiness.
Have you ever wondered why your prayer is answered in a particular way? Perhaps a good relationship ends, a unique but uncomfortable opportunity arises, or your life takes a major turn you didn’t see coming. In all that, look for Jesus and trust that what you are going through will lead you closer to him. God’s ways are above our ways and are always better.
Ask Jesus for greater trust in him taking care of you. No matter the situation or circumstance, he will do so in a beautiful, if unexpected, way.

St. Lucy: died AD 304
Not much is known about St. Lucy. She was a martyr for the faith who, according to legend, was accused of being a Christian by an unhappy suitor and consequently killed. Other stories include the local governor torturing her and having her eyes plucked out.
St. Lucy, pray for us!
