Gospel Reflection – December 5, 2024

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the crowds that everyone who listens to his words and acts on them is like a wise person who builds their house on a rock foundation, and nothing can tear it down. To the contrary, for those who listen to his words but do not act on them, it is like their house is built on sand, and is soon destroyed.

Jesus is saying quite explicitly that we must both listen and act upon his words, not simply listen and dismiss them. If we follow his command, we have a solid foundation on which to rely for the entirety of our lives. Take care not to merely listen to the Lord’s teachings and then dismiss the “irrelevant” or troubling ones you dislike. For then your foundation is quite shaky, and when difficult times arise, your faith may be in question.

Of course, we all struggle with acting on Jesus’ teachings at times, but we must try our best to follow them. In such moments, ask the Lord for strength to be faithful to him. Today, reflect on how you do or do not listen and act on Jesus’ words. He will help you improve, for he wants your faith to be built on solid rock; indeed, he is the firm foundation we must lean on at all times.
