“Consider the fig tree and all the other trees.
luke 21:29-31
When their buds burst open,
you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near;
in the same way, when you see these things happening,
know that the Kingdom of God is near.”
Luke 21:29-33
Reflection
Jesus gives the example of a fig tree blossoming and compares it to the signs of the end times. Just as the disciples know summer is approaching when the fig tree blooms, so too will the signs previously mentioned by Jesus indicate the nearness of the Kingdom of God.
There are times in our lives when we experience signs. They may be very small and seemingly unimportant, but are pointing us to something nonetheless. Do we pay attention or ignore such signs, especially when they pertain to a religious matter?
If you’ve felt a particular calling lately – perhaps to pray more, start reading the Bible, or go to daily Mass – act upon that, for it may be the Holy Spirit calling you. While it can be easy to take everything we see as a “sign,” we should follow those inclinations that lead us to greater holiness. Of course, it is necessary to properly discern and ask for spiritual guidance at those times as well, if needed.
Reflect on your relationship with the Holy Spirit and how you can better listen to his guidance and “signs.” Ask for an increase in faith and courage to do so. The Holy Spirit will never lead you astray.
