Gospel Reflection – November 28, 2024

Once more, Jesus provides further description of the end times. Various signs will appear, many people will die, and the Son of Man will come in a cloud of power and glory. Yet despite all this terror, Jesus tells us to stand erect with raised heads, because our redemption will be at hand.

When hearing about all the destruction to come, which may or may not occur in our lifetime, it is easy to lay low and keep our heads to the ground. Jesus tells us, rather, to keep our heads high. When reflecting upon our judgment, a raised head shows both the eager anticipation of seeing the Lord, and also the acknowledgment that we’ve sinned and must face the consequences.

This isn’t an entirely cheerful thought, but we have to own up to our sinfulness, and trust in the Lord’s mercy. Being a coward won’t do us any favors.

Ask Jesus for an increase in courage and humility. Both virtues will lead you to Christ, your judgment, but ultimately your redemption.
