“Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,

but whoever loses it will save it.”
Luke 17:26-37
Reflection
Jesus continues his dialogue about the day of the coming of the Son of Man. He compares that coming to Noah and Lot, where the people were going about their lives (not so honorably), and suddenly disaster struck. Jesus also says that on that day, a person must not return to their house or field for their belongings.
“Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it” – when Jesus comes again or when you encounter him fully in your life, will you turn back to your old life, or turn away from your old life to follow Christ?
As a society and culture, we are very attached to our current lifestyles and expectations, most of which revolve around materialism. It is useful to begin seriously practicing detachment from such things, because Jesus may ask you to fully give particular aspects of your life up for him. In that process of ‘losing’ your life, you will ultimately save it because you’ll be grounded in Christ.
Ask Jesus to reveal to you your unhealthy attachments – to people, social media, food, anger, etc. Sometimes those attachments will surprise us; things we didn’t think were bad/unhealthy for us, but actually are. Work on detaching and preparing yourself for total dedication to God, for he wants us to focus on him who provides eternal life.
