“Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
matthew 5:11-12
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.”
Matthew 5:1-12
Reflection
Jesus gives his Sermon on the Mount, or the Beatitudes, today. This is a perfect reading that pairs with All Saints’ Day. Many times, we might think we’re incapable of becoming saints. It seems like the saints in heaven are far holier than we’ll ever be. But Jesus teaches us how we can become saints, for that is our destiny.
By adopting an attitude of humility, we can begin to grow in holiness. In the Beatitudes, those who are poor in spirit, persecuted, meek, clean of heart, merciful, peacemakers; those who mourn and hunger and thirst – all these people will encounter the loving embrace of our Lord. Brought low or esteemed as such in the eyes of society, the people who practice Jesus’ teaching are able to encounter God.
What Beatitude do you have trouble following? Ask Jesus today to help you grow in that particular virtue. It will not always be an easy one, but the road to sainthood is possible for us all. Start by listening to Jesus’ tender words and begin living them out in your daily life.
