Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like?
luke 13:18-19
To what can I compare it?
It is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in the garden.”
Luke 13:18-21
Reflection
Jesus tells two parables about the kingdom of God. The first compares it to a mustard seed, and the second to yeast leavening bread. Both of these small items contribute to creating a large tree and batch of dough, respectively.
Jesus asks the people what the kingdom of God is like. What a great thing to ponder, especially since he provides these two parables. One way to reflect upon this is that small deeds contribute to the building of the kingdom, which is greater than any one small deed could achieve. Yet with faith and love, it is possible.
We should take comfort that in committing small acts – of kindness, service, charity, preaching, etc. – we can help enlarge the kingdom of God. When we act upon our Christian values, even in tiny ways we think won’t matter, the fruit from such actions can spread further and positively impact people more than we could have imagined.
The small things matter and are more powerful than we know. Dedicate yourself to performing small Christian acts that spread the love and peace of Christ. Ask Jesus to assist you in building up the kingdom of God here on earth.
Saint of the Day
St. Abraham Kidunaia: AD 296 – 366
St. Abraham Kidunaia was the son of a wealthy nobleman from Edessa in Mesopotamia, who, instead of getting married, chose to live in solitude and contemplation as a hermit. However, his holiness made him quite well known, and so he had much influence among the people. He was known for his generosity, giving away his family’s fortune. St. Abraham also converted a pagan city to Catholicism amidst many challenges.
St. Abraham Kidunaia, pray for us!
