“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,
Luke 12:48
and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”
Luke 12:39-48
Reflection
Jesus continues his parable of a faithful servant doing his master’s will versus the servant who abuses his power and does not follow his master’s will. Jesus tells the disciples that much will be required of a person entrusted with much, and even more will be demanded of a person entrusted with more.
For us, this last piece of the Gospel is very important. As Catholics, we have the fullness of truth revealed to us through the deposit of faith, which is manifested in the Church. We know full well what the Lord requires of us to get to heaven and live out his will. Of course, not everyone knows every detail of the Catechism or completely understands all Church doctrine. Yet through faith, we are required to believe all the Church teaches and follow suit accordingly.
This may sound daunting and unpleasing to some. There are certain Church teachings that may not align with your personal ideas and beliefs. In those instances, it is your job to do research, not simply disagree because you don’t understand. Jesus says that the servant who knew his master’s will but didn’t act accordingly would be punished severely.
We have the resources, through the Church, to follow God’s will – preparing our souls and acting in accordance with his will. We, as Catholics, have been entrusted with much, and must make appropriate use of that trust and knowledge.
Ask Jesus to reveal to you the Church teachings you struggle with following or believing. Ask him for the grace to faithfully follow his will through the Church.
