“You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb,
Luke 11:42
but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.”
Luke 11:42-46
Reflection
Today’s Gospel is a continuation from yesterday. Jesus continues to tell the Pharisees that they lead people astray, pay attention to unimportant matters rather than God, and love receiving attention in public places. Even the scholars of the law are called out by Jesus in much the same way.
What are we paying attention to that takes away from more important matters of our faith and relationship with Jesus? While it is important to pay taxes and perform necessary duties of daily living, it shouldn’t impede or take over our spiritual life. It is easy to get caught up in all those things, and Jesus understands that. The danger comes when we continually make them the priority, rather than the Lord.
Reflect on what you have been prioritizing in your life lately. Are you still making time for your faith life? If not, ask Jesus to help you better prioritize your time to be oriented towards him. With a life centered on Christ, all else will fall into place.
Saint of the Day
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque: 1647-1690
“The Sacred Heart is shown me as a sun brilliant with sparkling light, whose burning rays fall direct on my heart. I then feel myself inflamed with such a fire that it seems about to reduce me to ashes.”
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, The Life of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque
