Gospel Reflection – October 8, 2024

What a beautiful Gospel passage that highlights our tendency to worry and have anxiety about many things. Martha is busy serving, and complains to Jesus that her sister, Mary, is merely sitting by him and not helping her serve. Yet Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen the better part.

Do you tend to be Mary or Martha? Many times, we can get caught up in the ‘doing’ of life and become irritated at those who don’t help us or use their time to do something that we deem is less important. In those instances, we are like Martha: annoyed, anxious, and worried. We must then remember to turn to Jesus, give him those fears and worries, and sit at his feet listening, like Mary.

Jesus wants us to sit with him and listen to him. He can teach us many things and provide divine comfort. In fact, he may be calling you to serve others in your own special capacity, but first, you must spend prayerful time with the Lord.

When we are burdened and overwhelmed, we must turn to Jesus, lay our troubles at his feet and sit down beside him, offering those burdens to him. Allow Jesus to take your worries from you – he will provide you with the necessary strength when the time comes. Let him fully embrace you with his love today.

Saint of the Day

Sts. Palatias and Laurentia (Death: AD 302)

St. Palatias was a Roman noblewoman and St. Laurentia was her slave. Laurentia converted Palatias, and the two women were martyred under the reign of Emperor Diocletian.
